The Biggest Sporting Surprises to Shock Fans
While some games’ overall scoreline is predictable if you consider the playing teams’ reputation, record, and prowess, the outcomes of some sporting games sometimes leave the fan in complete shock. If you are a regular punter in sports betting, you’ve probably staked what looks like a sure deal only to have your celebration cut short. Did anyone see Leicester coming from the back to clinch the league title? Very unlikely. Therefore, here are some of such biggest sporting surprises to shock fans. Because of the shock factor, you have to be prepared when betting like these types of football bets.
The United States vs. Russia (the miracle that happened on ice)
Unless you deliberately left it out, you can’t look into the most significant sporting surprises and miss the 1980 Winter Olympics Men’s hockey game. At Lake Placid, everyone witnessed the nobodies of the United States defeat the Russians. Yes, you read that right. The United States hockey team in the 80s were a bunch of college nobodies while the Russians were gods on ice.
It wasn’t a match anyone expected to go any other way, other than in favor of the Soviets (Russia was the Soviet Union back in the 80s). Yet, the Americans won against the Russians in a turn of events that is still a miracle until today. I’m sure sports betting fans of the 80s would have recorded some significant losses after placing a bet against the Americans.
Iron-Mike Tyson vs. Douglas(1990)
With Tyson’s famous 50kg punch, that saw him through many fights, everyone probably thought Buster Douglas didn’t stand a chance, as he was on a 42 to 1 odds of defeating the champion. Surprisingly, in what looked like a dream and, at the same time, a shock to fans, it only took one perfect punch from Douglas to take Mike Tyson out in a humiliating knockout. It was a nightmare for boxing fans who had placed huge bets hoping to cash-in on a Tyson victory.
Nigeria’s most fabulous comeback ever
Let’s take it a little journey far down memory lane with one of the most surprising wins ever. No one saw it coming because Brazil was a million light-years better than Nigeria when it came to football. The African side came back from a 3-1 scoreline, winning the game at 4-3 with a dramatic golden goal/sudden death finish.
The game was considered a semi-final before the actual final against Argentina. Nigeria went ahead to win against the Argentines with a humiliating 3-0 defeat then clinched the Olympic gold medal. Altogether, the semifinal win against Brazil was still one of the most incredible wins in the Atlanta ’96 Olympic tournament and football history.
Juan Martin del Potro gave Roger Federer a shocker
It wasn’t just Federer that was shocked, but the entire tennis world equally didn’t see Juan Martin del Potro defeating the number one at the 2009 US open. Roger came to that US Open to claim his sixth consecutive title, only for the Italian underdog to stop him in his tracks. Del Potro finished impressively against all the odds. No one is sure if the defeat affected Federer negatively, but he took some time before getting his head back in the tennis game.
