21-22 Premier League Preview Week 7

Man City

The race to take control at the top of the Premier League was shaken up last weekend after a few twists and turns. Man City beat Chelsea 1-0 to ruin the Blues unbeaten start to the season. Liverpool are still without loss, but they were stunned in a frantic 3-3 draw against Brentford. The Reds are one point clear at the summit with 14 points. But City, Chelsea, Everton, Man United, and Brighton all breathing down their neck on 13 points.

Norwich are rooted to the bottom of the table with no points from six games, and Burnley, Newcastle, Southampton, and Leeds are all without a run this season. The biggest clash this weekend sees Liverpool host Man City at Anfield and either side could move top with a win. Man United and Everton also face off at Old Trafford, and these two sides could also take advantage with an early kick-off on Saturday. Overperformers West Ham and Brentford also meet in what could be the surprise package of the weekend.

Man United vs Everton

Man United lost back to back games for the first time this season after a shock 1-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on Saturday. The Red Devils had plenty of chances, and Bruno Fernandes missed a late penalty, denying United a draw. United have lost three of their last four in all competitions. They previously lost 1-0 to West Ham in the EFL Cup and suffered another startling 2-1 defeat against Young Boys in the Champions League.

Everton bounced back from two consecutive defeats on Saturday to beat Norwich 2-0 at home. The Toffees took their chances in the game, with Andros Townsend and Abdoulaye Doucouré finding the net. Rafa Benitez’s side lost 3-0 to Villa and fell on penalties in the EFL Cup against QPR last week. The Merseyside team have been inconsistent away this season, winning one of their three Premier League matches on the road.

Luke Shaw could return for United after a recent knock. Harry Maguire (calf), Amad Traore (thigh), and Marcus Rashford (shoulder) are ruled out. Everton will be without Richarlison (knee), Seamus Coleman (thigh), Fabian Delph (shoulder), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (thigh), Andre Gomes (calf), and Jordan Pickford (shoulder).

United will want a response after two poor results. They should overcome Everton, who have been poor away recently.

Brighton vs Arsenal

Brighton missed their chance to go top of the Premier League on Monday after coming back to draw 1-1 against rivals Crystal Palace. The south coast side were on the back foot for most of the match before Neal Maupay netted the equaliser in the 96th minute. The result ended a three-match winning streak for Graham Potter’s side. They previously beat Brentford 1-0 away before consecutive home wins against Leicester and Swansea.

Arsenal stunned their North London rivals Tottenham with a 3-1 victory on Sunday. Mikel Arteta’s side scored three goals in 30 minutes and extended their winning run in all competitions to four matches. The Gunners have also lost just one in their last six and have won two of their last three on the road.

Steven Alzate (ankle) and Adam Webster (thigh) are out for Brighton, but Danny Welbeck, Enock Mwepu, Yves Bissouma could be in contention. Granit Xhaka is unavailable for Arsenal with a knee injury.

Brighton were unconvincing against Palace, and Arsenal are a team on the up. An away win could be on the cards for the Gunners.

Brighton – 21/10

Arsenal – 11/8

West Ham vs Brentford

West Ham recovered from their late 2-1 defeat against Man United two weeks ago and beat Leeds 2-1 away on Saturday. David Moyes’ side went a goal down and came back to score two late goals in the second half, including a Michail Antonio strike in the 90th minute. The East London side have now lost just one of their opening eight matches in all competitions, and they sit seventh in the Premier League.

Brentford’s impressive return to the Premier League continued last weekend as they came from behind to draw 3-3 with Liverpool. The Bees were 2-1 down with 30 minutes left but completed the turnaround thanks to a late Yoane Wissa goal. Thomas Frank’s side are now unbeaten in their last three matches following a 2-0 win against Wolves and after thrashing Oldham 7-0 in the EFL Cup.

West Ham’s Ryan Fredericks is out with a groin injury. For Brentford, Josh Dasilva (groin) and Mads Sorenson (knee) are ruled out, but Ethan Pinnock should recover from a hip injury.

West Ham and Brentford are in good form, and each side should hold out for a point at the London Stadium.

West Ham – 3/4

Brentford – 4/1

Liverpool vs Man City

Liverpool continued their unbeaten start to the season in all competitions after breezed past FC Porto with a 5-1 victory in the Champions League on Tuesday. Jurgen Klopp’s side were in top form, and there were braces for Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino in Porto. In the Premier League, the Reds have only dropped four points from a possible 18. Liverpool have also won to nil in all four of their Premier League victories this season.

Man City’s eight-match unbeaten run came to an end in midweek as Pep Guardiola’s side were downed by a 2-0 away loss to Paris St Germain. The Citizens seemed to have steadied the ship following an opening day 1-0 loss to Spurs in the Premier League after winning six of their last eight. However, the loss to PSG and a 0-0 draw at home to Southampton two weeks ago show there are frailties for the Premier League champions.

Thiago Alcantara (calf) and Harvey Elliott (leg) are out for Liverpool. Trent Alexander-Arnold is doubtful with a groin injury. City’s Ilkay Gundogan is ruled out with a thigh injury. Oleksandr Zinchenko is doubtful with a knock.

Liverpool are the team to beat in the Premier League this season. City will be buoyed by their 1-0 win over Chelsea last weekend, however, and they will feel they can take a point from Anfield.

Liverpool – 9/5

Man City – 7/5

Draw – 5/2
