21-22 Premier League Preview Week 5
The Premier League is taking shape as we head towards game week five. Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and surprise package Everton lead the pack on 10 points at the top of the table. At the bottom, Arsenal got off the mark with a home win against Norwich last weekend to relieve the pressure on Mikel Arteta. The Canaries, Newcastle, Burnley and Leeds are still searching for their first league wins.
Newcastle and Leeds face off on Friday night, and both sides will be desperate to get off the mark and climb the table. Everton will look to keep chase as they travel to mid-table Aston Villa. Man United will want to secure their lead at the top of the table and Cristiano Ronaldo will look to score against as they face West Ham, while there’s a London derby as Tottenham host Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle vs Leeds
Newcastle’s winless start to the season continued as they were dismantled by Man United on Saturday. The Magpies went a goal down, and Javi Manquillo equalised, but they couldn’t kick on and conceded three late goals to lose 4-1. Steve Bruce’s side have lost three of their opening four Premier League matches, including a 4-2 home defeat to West Ham and a 2-0 loss away at Aston Villa. Newcastle have drawn their last two at home, with a 0-0 EFL Cup stalemate against Burnley and a 2-2 against Southampton before the international break.
Leeds were hammered 3-0 against Liverpool last time out. The Whites conceded either side of half time. Pascal Struijk was sent off, and Liverpool added a third late on. The result ended a three-match unbeaten run for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who drew 2-2 against Everton and 1-1 at Burnley before the Liverpool loss. Leeds have struggled away, losing three of their last four on the road.
Newcastle will be without Martin Dubravka (ankle) and Elliot Anderson (groin). Callum Wilson, Paul Dummett, Javi Manquillo, Joe Willock, Jonjo Shelvey and Ryan Fraser could all be in contention after recent injuries. Leeds’ Adam Forshaw (muscular injury), Pascal Struijk (suspended), Robin Koch (groin) and Diego Llorente (muscular injury) are ruled out.
Newcastle and Leeds have started the season poorly, and they will want to avoid defeat at St James’ Park with a draw likely.
Aston Villa vs Everton
Aston Villa fell to a 3-0 away defeat against Chelsea last time out. Villan rarely threatened and struggled to get a foothold in the match. The defeat leaves Dean Smith’s side with one win in their first four Premier League matches, a 2-0 home victory against Newcastle. The Midland’s side otherwise are in patchy form. They lost their opening match 3-2 against top-flight new boys Watford and were held to a 1-1 home draw against Brentford.
Everton have started the season in excellent form. The Toffees are unbeaten in five matches and have won four. Rafa Benitez’s side have won their last three games in a row, beaten Huddersfield 3-1, Brighton 1-0, and Burnley 3-0. Everton are also hard to beat away, and they have avoided defeat in 16 of their last 19 in all competitions on the road.
Carney Chukwuemeka (knock), Keinan Davis (knee), and Trezeguet (knee) are out for Villa. Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia should return to the squad. Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin (broken toe) and Fabian Delph (shoulder) are out, but James Rodriguez could return.
Everton are in excellent form and look hard to beat. They should defeat a patchy Aston Villa side.
West Ham vs Man United
After a promising start to the new campaign, with two wins from two, West Ham’s form has dipped slightly. The Hammers have drawn their last two matches a 2-2 stalemate at home against Palace came before a 0-0 away draw with Southampton. The recent results extended West Ham’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven consecutive matches, including four wins in their last six.
Man United couldn’t build on their 4-1 victory against Newcastle on Saturday, and they fell to a shock 2-1 away loss against Young Boys in the Champions League. Aaron Wan Bissaka was sent off early on United were poor in response and registered two shots in the match. Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be keen to return to Premier League action. The Red Devils are top on goal difference after three wins from their first four league games.
Michail Antonio is suspended for West Ham. United will be with Edinson Cavani (knock), Alex Telles (ankle), Amad Diallo (thigh), and Marcus Rashford (shoulder).
West Ham may be fatigued after their European fixture on Thursday. United will want a response after their loss to Young Boys so the Red Devils could edge this one.
Tottenham vs Chelsea
Tottenham were stunned away at Crystal Palace last weekend, falling to a disappointing 3-0 defeat. Japhet Tanganga’s sending off in the second half allowed Palace more opportunities, and they scored three late goals. It ended Spurs’ run of three straight wins to open their Premier League campaign. The North London club beat Man City, Wolves and Watford 1-0, and they were top of the table until the Palace loss.
Chelsea continued their promising start to the 2021/22 season with a 1-0 win against Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League in mid-week. New signing Romelu Lukaku scored the decisive goal with 20 minutes remaining to extend the Blues’ unbeaten start. Chelsea have won all of their games, except one, to nil. Their only goal conceded came in a 1-1 draw against title rivals Liverpool.
Spurs’ Brazilian trio Davidson Sanchez, Giovanni Lo Celso, and Cristian Romero are doubtful due to quarantine. Japhet Tanganga is suspended, and Son Heung-Min (calf) is also out injured. Christian Pulisic and N’Golo Kante should be in contention for Chelsea.
Chelsea are in top form, and they should comfortably defeat a Spurs side missing several key players.
