21-22 Premier League Preview Week 4

Man United vs Newcastle

The Premier League returns this weekend after the international break as the league table starts to take shape. Some teams will have been grateful for the pause on domestic action. Arsenal will have to re-group after losing all three of their opening matches without scoring. They sit bottom of the table with Norwich and Wolves, who also have no points.

Tottenham would have been cursing the break as they lead the Premier League. Spurs are the only team with a 100% record and are yet to concede. West Ham, Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Everton are in the trailing pack, all on seven points. This weekend, Arsenal and Norwich will battle to each other to try and climb out the bottom three. There is also a repeat of the Community Shield final as Leicester will hope to cause an upset against Man City.

Arsenal vs Norwich

Arsenal have made their worst start to a top-flight campaign in 67 years after losing their first three matches. The Gunners fell to a 2-0 defeat against Brentford in their opening match before a 2-0 home loss against Chelsea and a 5-0 hammering at Man City. Mikel Arteta’s side have also won just two of their last home matches in all competitions.

Norwich lost 2-1 against Leicester before the international break, but showed encouraging signs after losses to Liverpool and Man City in their opening two matches. However, the Canaries are on a 13-match losing streak in the top-flight, a run that stretches back to the 2019/20 campaign when they were relegated to the Championship.

Granit Xhaka is suspended for Arsenal. Mohamed Elneny (muscular injury) and Sead Kolasinac (knock) are doubtful, but Thomas Partey could be back in contention. Sam Byram (thigh), Przemyslaw Placheta (knock), and Bali Mumba (knee) are ruled out for Norwich.

Arsenal should earn their first win of the season against Norwich. They have won their last five against the Canaries at the Emirates and they are likely to get their first three points of the season this weekend.

Arsenal – 1/2

Norwich – 11/2

Leicester vs Man City

Leicester bounced back from a 4-1 away defeat against West Ham recently and beat Norwich 2-1 before the international break. The Foxes have won two of their first three matches of the season, also defeating Wolves 1-0 at home on the opening day. Brendan Rodgers’ side are in decent form at the King Power, winning six of their last eight in all competitions.

Man City recorded big back-to-back home wins in recent weeks, defeating Norwich and Arsenal 5-0 at the Etihad. The Citizens suffered a shock 1-0 defeat on the opening day of the Premier League at Tottenham and they have lost their last two away matches in the league. Pep Guardiola’s side have also struggled against Leicester in recent meetings, losing two of their last three against the Foxes.

Leicester forward Ayoze Perez is suspended. Nampalys Mendy (groin), Wesley Fofana (calf), James Justin (knee), and Ricardo Pereira (thigh) are also ruled out. Phil Foden (ankle) and Zack Steffen (coronavirus) are unavailable for City. Kevin De Bruyne is also doubtful with an ankle injury.

Leicester will give City a tough match, but the Citizens should win as the Foxes are missing some key players.

Leicester – 5/1

Man City – 8/15

Man United vs Newcastle

Man United have kept chase at the top of the table, despite some tricky fixtures recently. The Red Devils defeated Leeds 5-1 in their first match, before a disappointing 1-1 draw away at Southampton. They edged past Wolves 1-0 in their last match before the international break. United are unbeaten in their last four matches at Old Trafford in all competitions, including a 4-0 win against Everton in preseason.

Newcastle picked up their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw at home against Southampton last time out. Steve Bruce’s side led 2-1 with seconds to go before conceding a late equaliser. The result leaves the Magpies winless in their last four matches in all competitions. The north east side have struggled at Old Trafford in recent years, losing their last four here.

United will be without Dean Henderson (fitness), Marcus Rashford (shoulder), Phil Jones (knee), Scott McTominay (groin), and Alex Telles (ankle). For Newcastle, Elliot Anderson (groin), Karl Darlow (knock), Ryan Fraser (ankle), Jonjo Shelvey (calf), and Martin Dubravka (ankle) are unavailable.

United will respond after two lackluster displays against Wolves and Southampton. They should defeat a Newcastle side who lose regularly at Old Trafford.

Man United – 1/6

Newcastle – 14/1

Leeds vs Liverpool

Leeds are still fighting for their first Premier League win of the season. The Whites fell to a heavy 5-1 loss against Man United before securing back-to-back draws against Everton and Burnley before the international break. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have won just one match in their last nine in all competitions, a 3-0 win against League Two Crewe in the EFL Cup.

Liverpool remain unbeaten in the Premier League after wins against Burnley and Norwich. The Reds also drew 1-1 against title rivals Chelsea last time out to keep chase at the top of the table. The result extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the top-flight to 13 consecutive matches, during which they have won 10 matches. Jurgen Klopp’s side have also won seven of their last eight away matches in the Premier League.

Robin Koch is out for Leeds with a groin injury, but Junior Firpo and Mateusz Klich will return after isolating. Liverpool will be without Roberto Firmino (thigh) and Takumi Minamino (thigh) and Neco Williams (ankle) are also doubtful.

Liverpool are in good early season form and Leeds are struggling so expect the Reds to record another win at Elland Road this weekend.

Leeds – 7/2

Liverpool – 13/2

Draw – 10/3
