21-22 Premier League Preview Week 38
The stage is set for an enthralling finale to the 2021/22 Premier League season. Lead leaders Man City hold a one-point advantage over second-placed Liverpool with one game remaining. The Citizens will secure the title with a win, while Liverpool must also win against Wolves and rely on Aston Villa to defeat City at the Etihad.
Beyond the title race, the battle for fourth is still on. Tottenham has a two-point advantage over rivals Arsenal heading into match week 38. Spurs will secure fourth place with a victory over bottom side Norwich. The relegation dogfight will also head into the final day with Leeds and Burnley battling to avoid the drop as they face Brentford and Newcastle in their respective fixtures. Across the board, there is plenty to keep an eye on in this exciting Premier League climax.

Brentford vs Leeds
Brentford has notched consecutive victories in their last two following wins over Southampton (3-0) at home and Everton away (3-2). Five wins in seven for Thomas Frank’s side has moved the Bees comfortably into mid-table in the Premier League. At home, Brentford are also in good form, going unbeaten in their last four, winning three and drawing once.
Leeds gave themselves a fighting chance of securing Premier League safety with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Brighton last time out. Pascal Struijk scored a 91st-minute equaliser at Elland Road to end the Whites’ three-match losing streak in the Premier League. Away from home, Jesse Marsch’s side has secured some decent results recently. They have won two, drawn one and lost once in their last four on the road.
Saman Ghoddos, Ethan Pinnock and Frank Onyeka could all return for Brentford. But Mathias Jorgensen is out. Leeds striker Patrick Bamford may be in contention. Dan James and Luke Ayling are suspended, while Stuart Dallas (thigh), Adam Forshaw (knee) and Tyler Roberts (thigh) are sidelined.
Brentford will want to end their season on a high after a strong end to their campaign. Leeds are struggling and they are without a lot of key players so a home win is likely.
Liverpool vs Wolves
Liverpool ensured the title race would go to the final day with a 2-1 victory over Southampton last time out. The result followed an FA Cup final win over Chelsea on Saturday, which was decided on penalties. Victory at Southampton extended the Reds’ unbeaten run to 17 in all competitions and they have won 14 during this run. Jurgen Klopp’s side also remain unbeaten at Anfield in the Premier League this season, winning 13 of their 17 home games.
Wolves’ winless run in the Premier League extended to six with a 1-1 home draw with Norwich on Sunday. Four losses during this run also ended Wolves’ chances of reaching the European places in the Premier League. Bruno Lage’s side has also struggled away recently and they are winless in five of their last six on the road.
Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah could return for Liverpool, but Joe Gomes is doubtful with an ankle injury. Wolves trio Romain Saiss (knee), Nelson Semedo (thigh) and Max Kilman (ankle) are out.
With the title race still on, Liverpool can apply pressure on Man City with a home win over out of form Wolves.
Man City vs Aston Villa
Man City drew 2-2 at West Ham on Sunday, a result which ended their five-match winning streak in the Premier League. The dropped points also allowed Liverpool to get within one point of the Citizens heading into the final day. However, home form has been a real strength for Pep Guardiola’s side this season. The Citizens have won 11 of their last 13 Premier League matches at the Etihad.
Aston Villa face Burnley at Villa Park this evening as they hope to bounce back from a 2-1 home loss against Liverpool and a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. Any chances of Steven Gerrard’s side making a late push for Europe this season ended due to recent inconsistent form. Especially away, as the Villans have lost two and drawn one in their last four on the road.
Kyle Walker may return for City, but John Stones and Ruben Dias are ruled out with thigh injuries. Villa pair Ezri Konsa (knee) and Kortney Hause (chest) are unavailable.
City has been in sensational home form this season. They can wrap up a consecutive Premier League title against a patchy Villa side.
Norwich vs Tottenham
Norwich ended their five-match losing streak in the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Wolves last time out. The Canaries also broke their goalless streak with the tie as they had failed to score in their previous four matches. Their home form also remains an issue for the already relegated side. They have lost five of their last six at Carrow Road and taken just seven points from the last 33 available at home.
Tottenham recorded back to back Premier League wins against Burnley (1-0) and Arsenal (3-0) in their last two. The victories saw Antonio Conte’s side leapfrog North London rivals Arsenal into fourth spot and Spurs now hold a two-point advantage heading into the final game. However, Spurs have drawn their last two on the road against Brentford and Liverpool. They have also won twice away in their last six in all competitions.
Adam Idah (knee), Andrew Omobamidele (back), Christoph Zimmermann (groin), Kenny McLean (ankle), Josh Sargent (ankle), Mathias Normann (knock), and Ozan Kabak are out for Norwich. Spurs defender Cristian Romero will have a late fitness test. Oliver Skipp (groin), Sergio Reguilon (groin), Matt Doherty (knee), and Japhet Tanganga (knee) are out.
Although Spurs’ away form is inconsistent, they should have enough quality to see off a struggling Norwich side.
