21-22 Premier League Preview Week 35
The 2021/22 Premier League season is coming to a head. With just five matches left, nothing is set in stone in the league table as fights for the title, European places and against the drop continue. In a weekend full of big grudge matches last weekend, Liverpool saw off city rivals Everton, Chelsea beat West Ham in a London derby and Arsenal defeated Man United in the top four race.
Tottenham also dropped points, drawing 0-0 at Brentford. In the relegation places, Burnley won to climb out of the relegation places. However, Norwich, Watford and Everton all lost as they remain in the bottom three. This weekend, teams can make big statements for their respective places in the Premier League. In-form Newcastle face title-chasers Liverpool and Man City take a tough trip to relegation scrapping Leeds. There is also a huge clash in the bottom three as Watford host Burnley.

Newcastle vs Liverpool
Newcastle won their fourth consecutive Premier League match with a comfortable 3-0 win at Norwich last time out. The Magpies previously recorded three straight home wins over Wolves (1-0), Leicester (2-1) and Crystal Palace. At home, Eddie Howe’s side are one of the most in-form sides. They have won their last six at St James’ Park and have lost once in their last 12.
Liverpool’s push for a historic quadruple continued in mid-week as the Reds saw off a resilient Villarreal 2-0 at Anfield in the Champions League. It was Liverpool’s fourth consecutive win in all competitions and their third straight victory without conceding. In the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp’s side has won 12 of their last 13, only dropping points in a 2-2 draw against title rivals, Man City.
Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier could be in contention for Newcastle. Jamal Lewis (groin), Isaac Hayden (knee) and Ryan Fraser (thigh) are ruled out. Roberto Firmino should return from a recent knock for Liverpool.
Newcastle are in decent form, but Liverpool will be a step up in quality compared to the Magpies’ recent opposition. Liverpool looks unbeatable on current form and an away win is likely.
Watford vs Burnley
Watford lost their fourth consecutive Premier League match with a 5-1 thrashing at Man City on Saturday. Defeats against Brentford (2-1), Leeds (3-0) and Liverpool (2-0) came before the City loss. Roy Hodgson’s side has now taken just four points from their last nine top-flight matches and they remain in 19th place and nine points from safety. Watford also has the worst home form in the league, losing their last ten in a row at Vicarage Road.
Burnley clambered out of the Premier League relegation zone with a 1-0 home win over Wolves last time out. The result extended the Clarets’ unbeaten run to three after a 1-1 draw at West Ham and a 2-0 victory over Southampton. Despite the upturn in form, Burnley has struggled away in the Premier League this season. They have won just one of their last 16 matches on the road this season, but have lost just two of their last six.
Francisco Sierralta, Samuel Kalu, Juraj Kucka, Kiko Femenia and Kwndo Baah could all return for Watford this weekend. Cucho Hernandez is out with a thigh injury. Burnley duo Maxwel Cornet and Jay Rodriguez could be in contention. But Erik Pieters (knee), Ashley Westwood (ankle), Johann Berg Gudmundsson (calf) and Ben Mee (calf) are out.
Watford look low on confidence and they are severely out of form at home. Burnley has winning momentum and they can continue their impressive turnaround with a win at Watford.
Leeds vs Man City
Leeds earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace on Monday to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five matches. Three wins and two draws during this run have helped the Whites climb to 16th place and they sit five points clear of the relegation places. However, Jesse Marsch’s side has won just one of their last six at Elland Road and conceded 14 goals in this spell.
Man City won their third consecutive match in all competitions with a 4-3 home win against Real Madrid in the Champions League. The victory followed back-to-back Premier League wins at home against Brighton (3-0) and Watford (5-1) as the Citizens remain top of the table by one point. Pep Guardiola’s side has also been hard to beat on the road recently, going unbeaten in their last 13 and winning ten.
Jamie Shackleton remains doubtful for Leeds. Tyler Roberts (thigh), Patrick Bamford (ankle) and Adam Forshaw (knee) remain sidelined. City defender Kyle Walker is unlikely to feature and John Stones is ruled out with a muscular injury.
Leeds has improved recently and they may make life hard for City. But, the Premier League leaders are unlikely to let up in the title race and they can record a narrow win at Elland Road.
West Ham vs Arsenal
West Ham’s winless run in the Premier League extended to three with a 1-0 loss at Chelsea last time out. The Hammers previously held Burnley to a 1-1 home draw and lost 2-0 at Brentford. In their last ten league matches, David Moyes’ side has won just three. But all of these victories came at home and the East London side are unbeaten in their last six league games at home, winning four and drawing two.
Arsenal boosted their chances of qualifying for the Champions League in their last two matches as the Gunners beat Chelsea away (4-2) and Man United at home (3-1). The consecutive wins have created a two-point gap between Arsenal in fourth place and Spurs in fifth place in the Premier League. Although, Mikel Arteta’s side have been unconvincing away recently, losing two of their last three at Crystal Palace (3-0) and Southampton (1-0).
West Ham’s Craig Dawson is suspended, while Kurt Zouma (ankle), Issa Diop (ankle), and Angelo Ogbonna (knee) are ruled out. For Arsenal, Kieran Tierney (knee) and Thomas Partey (thigh) are out.
West Ham will give Arsenal a tough game at the London Stadium. But the Gunners will be confident after beating their top-four rivals recently and they can continue their winning streak in East London.
