21-22 Premier League Preview Week 3
More exciting games taking place across gameweek three in the Premier League. West Ham made it two wins from two and are top of the table. They are joined at the summit by Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Brighton, who have all enjoyed perfect starts to the new season. Towards the bottom of the table, eight teams remain winless after their first five matches.
Surprisingly, Arsenal have not registered a point or a goal after back-to-back defeats to Chelsea in last weekend’s game, and Brentford the opening wekeend. The Gunners face another tough test in gameweek three as they travel to the Etihad to take on a City side who thrashed Norwich 5-0 last weekend. Liverpool and Chelsea also face off this weekend, with both sides looking to maintain their 100% start to the Premier League.

Man City vs Arsenal
City bounced back from their 1-0 defeat against Tottenham on the opening day of the Premier League and beat Norwich 5-0 at home. The Citizens were dominant, and Jack Grealish, Aymeric Laporte, Raheem Sterling, and Gabriel Jesus found the net. Pep Guardiola’s side have won their last five matches at home, scored 15 and conceded just one.
Arsenal’s nightmare start to the 2021/22 season continued last weekend as they fell to a 2-0 home defeat against Chelsea. The Gunners rarely threatened and have failed to score in their first two matches of the season. Following their poor pre-season, Mikel Arteta’s side are winless in six consecutive matches and have lost their last four in a row.
City will be without Liam Delap (knock) and Phil Foden (ankle). Edward Nketiah (ankle), Thomas Partey (ankle), Ben White (covid), and Gabriel (knee) are ruled out for the Gunners.
City should defeat a wounded Arsenal this weekend. Arsenal have lost their last five matches at the Etihad and failed to score in their last two visits.
Aston Villa vs Brentford
Aston Villa have found their rhythm this season after a shock 3-2 loss against Watford in their opening match. Villa comfortably beat Newcastle 2-0 at home before demolishing Barrow 6-0 away in the EFL Cup in midweek. Dean Smith’s side have won seven of their last nine matches in all competitions and have won their last three on the spin at home, including a 2-1 win against Chelsea at the end of last season.
Brentford remain unbeaten in the 2021/22 season after wins against Arsenal (2-0) and Forest Green (3-1). The Bees were held to a 0-0 draw away at Crystal Palace in their last Premier League match, but they were largely the better side with more possession and shots. Thomas Frank’s side are unbeaten in their last five away. Although, they have drawn their two consecutive games on the road.
Morgan Sanson (knee), Trézéguet (knee), and Bertrand Traore (thigh) are all unavailable for Villa. Josh Dasilva (hip) is Brentford’s only absentee.
Aston Villa are in fine form, particularly at home. Brentford will give Villa a tough test, but the home side should edge the Premier League new boys.
Liverpool vs Chelsea
Liverpool beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday to maintain their 100% start to the Premier League season. Jurgen Klopp’s side brushed Norwich aside in their opening match with a comfortable 3-0 away win. The results extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to 12, and they have won their last seven successive games.
Chelsea were in top form as they beat Arsenal 2-0 away on Sunday. New striker Romelu Lukaku opened his account for the Blues, and Reece James was also on target. Thomas Tuchel’s side also have a 100% record after defeating Crystal Palace 3-0 at home in their first Premier League match of the season. Chelsea have won six of their last eight matches in the top-flight and remain unbeaten in seven games in all competitions.
Liverpool trio Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (personal reasons), James Milner (knock), and Fabio Tavares (personal reasons) could return to action this weekend. Christian Pulisic (covid) and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (knock) are unavailable for Chelsea.
Liverpool may dominate possession in this match, but they will struggle to break down Chelsea. The Blues will look to counter, so a tight 1-1 draw is likely at Anfield.
Wolves vs Man United
Wolves have started their Premier League campaign in poor form after losing their opening two matches. Bruno Lage’s side lost 1-0 against Leicester in gameweek one, before another 1-0 defeat against Wolves at Molineux. However, the Midlands side did bounce back in midweek with a comprehensive 4-0 away win against Nottingham Forest.
Man United couldn’t build on their big 5-1 opening day win against Leeds as they drew 1-1 away at Southampton. United responded after Fred scored an own goal in the first half, but despite controlling possession, the Red Devils failed to threaten the Saints. The result extended United’s unbeaten run away in the top-flight to 27 matches. However, the wins have dried up recently, and United have drawn six of their last 10 on the road.
Expect to see a response from United against Wolves this weekend. Wolves have struggled for goals, and the Red Devils will be on the offensive after a poor display against Southampton.
Wolves will be without Hugo Bueno (thigh), Yerson Mosquera (thigh), Pedro Neto (knee), Jonny (knee), and Willy Boly (thigh). Alex Telles (fitness), Marcus Rashford (shoulder), and Dean Henderson (fitness) are all ruled out.
