21-22 Premier League Preview Week 29
The Premier League fixtures have been coming thick and fast recently. There was a full match list last weekend, followed by several key mid-week fixtures. Although, the fixture pile-up has not knocked Liverpool and Man City from the title race. Only six points separate the title challengers after both sides won last weekend. The race for Europe has also gained traction in recent weeks. Chelsea, Arsenal, Man United, Tottenham and West Ham all remain in the hunt for Champions League football next season.
This weekend, the action continues with another packed schedule. On the South coast, Liverpool will try to get an early weekend advantage over City as the Reds travel to out of form Brighton. City will have to wait until Monday to potentially make up ground as they head to Crystal Palace. In the relegation fight, Burnley will hope to make up ground with a trip to Brentford. Man United then host Spurs in a big match in the race for the top four.

Brighton vs Liverpool
Brighton lost their fourth consecutive Premier League match last time out, losing 2-1 away against Newcastle. The result followed defeats back-to-back home losses against Aston Villa (2-0) and Burnley (3-0). Graham Potter’s side has now won just once in their last eight Premier League matches The South coast side have also won once in their last ten league games at the Amex.
Liverpool’s 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end in mid-week as the Reds lost 1-0 at home against Inter Milan. However, a 2-0 away win in the first leg saw Jurgen Klopp’s side progress in the Champions League. In the Premier League, Liverpool has put together a seven-match winning streak to keep the pressure on league leaders Man City. Although, only two of the wins have come on the road.
Brighton duo Enock Mwepu and Jeremy Sarmiento are doubtful and Adam Webster (groin) is out. Liverpool pair Ibrahima Konate and Roberto Firmino could be in contention after recent injuries.
Brighton and Liverpool are in contrasting form and the Reds can extend their winning run against the struggling Seagulls.
Brentford vs Burnley
Brentford ended their nine-match winless run in all competitions with a 3-1 away win over Norwich on Saturday. The Bees had lost eight of their previous nine and the win moved the West London side six points clear of the relegation zone. However, Thomas Frank’s side remains in poor home form, taking just one point from their last four Premier League matches.
Burnley’s relegation resistance has taken a hit in recent weeks as the Clarets have fallen to consecutive defeats. Sean Dyce’s side lost 2-0 at home against Leicester before a 4-0 defeat against Chelsea last time out. In their previous three before the back-to-back losses, Burnley had won two and drawn one, giving them some hope of avoiding relegation. The Clarets are also unbeaten in their last three on the road, drawing two and winning one.
Brentford’s Josh Dasilva is suspended. Julian Jeanvier (knee), Tarique Fosu (thigh) and Christian Norgaard (knock) are out. Burnley trio Ben Mee, Dale Stephens and Matej Vydra should return to the squad. But Johann Berg Gudmundsson (calf) and Erik Pieters (knee) are ruled out.
Brentford will be on high after their win against Norwich and Burnley will want to tighten up following consecutive losses and a draw is likely.
Man United vs Tottenham
Man United are winless in their last three matches following a 4-1 derby loss at Man City on Sunday. United have now won just two of their last eight in all competitions. At Old Trafford, Ralf Rangnick’s side has won once in their last four matches – a 2-0 victory over ten-man Brighton. The dip in form leaves the Red Devils with a two point cushion in fourth place.
Tottenham bounced back from a shock FA Cup exit against Middlesborough last week with a 5-0 home win against Everton on Monday. The result capped a period of patchy form for Antonio Conte’s side. Spurs have lost four and won three of their last seven in all competitions. However, the North London side are picking up good form in the Premier League after three wins in their last four, including victories at Man City (3-2) and Leeds (4-0).
Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani may all return for United. For Spurs, Japhet Taganga is doubtful with a knee injury. Ryan Sessegnon (knock) and Oliver Skipp (groin) are also unlikely to feature.
Man United are struggling to find any form and they will be hurt by their rivalry loss against City. Spurs are on the up after some strong Premier League results and they can record a shock away win.
Crystal Palace vs Man City
Crystal Palace extended their unbeaten run to four with a 2-0 win over Wolves last weekend. Palace previously knocked out Stoke in the FA Cup with a 2-1 win and beat Watford 4-1 away in the Premier League. Just one loss in their last six league matches has helped Patrick Vieira’s side jump into the top half of the table in recent weeks.
Man City held Sporting CP to a 0-0 home draw in the Champions League in mid-week. The Citizens previously beat the Portuguese side 5-0 in the first leg to progress in Europe. The draw followed three consecutive wins in domestic competitions, including a 4-1 home win over Man United last time out. Pep Guardiola’s side are also in strong away form, winning their last four on the road without conceding.
Palace’s James McArthur (knock), Joel Ward (groin) and Nathan Ferguson (thigh) are out. Joao Cancelo is likely to return for City, but Zack Steffen and Nathan Ake are doubtful. Ruben Dias is also out with a thigh injury.
Palace should give City a tough test in South London. However, with City in top form on the road, they can edge the Eagles and hold their position at the top of the Premier League.
